One of the most consistent findings across studies is the positive impact of nature on one’s health and mood. With many of us lacking time during the workweek, the news that even just 15 minutes in nature can significantly boost mood, concentration and overall wellbeing is reason to celebrate. Time outdoors helps increase feelings of happiness and optimism while reducing stress, anxiety, and negative thoughts.

While studies suggest a 75-minute walk in secluded woodlands can be particularly effective, research also shows that walking in urban green spaces or tree-lined streets can provide similar benefits. Even short breaks, like a quick walk through a park or some time in the garden, can provide a mental reset and help build resilience to daily challenges.

Furthermore, lab studies have shown people perform better on tasks involving attention and memory after viewing nature scenes compared to urban ones. Exposure to nature can enhance concentration, especially for office workers, but even workplaces with indoor plants report better wellbeing and productivity.

Research also shows that nature can improve exercise performance. In one study, participants who spent time in nature before cycling to exhaustion performed better than those who had been in an urban environment. This means that even if you don’t work out outdoors, a brief visit to a park before exercising can enhance your physical performance and make workouts feel less taxing.

Whether it’s taking a lunch break in a park or walking a greener route to work, small outdoor moments can instantly improve your mood and wellbeing. Over time, these simple habits can boost motivation, improve work performance, and even make exercise more enjoyable.

As Australia's largest community tree planting and nature care event, National Tree Day is a great way to get outside and connect with nature. Spending time outside in the cool shade of trees or even just looking at them, provides enormous benefits to our health and wellbeing.

Remember to take a few minutes each day to step outside and reconnect with nature; it could be just what you need to feel better, both mentally and physically.
