Coldplay's ‘Music of the Spheres’ tour has set a new sustainability standard in the music industry through innovative practices and fan collaboration.

In 2021 following frontman Chris Martin's pledge to tour responsibly, Coldplay introduced a 12-point plan to reduce their emissions while touring. Their goal for the Music of the Spheres world tour, which began in 2022, was to cut carbon emissions from performance production, freight and travel by at least 50 per cent on their previous world tour.

Recently, the band announced they had exceeded this goal.

"We’re happy to report that direct CO2e emissions from the first two years of this tour are 59 percent less than our previous stadium tour (2016-2017), on a show-by-show comparison," the band said.

A key part of Coldplay’s sustainability efforts involves engaging fans to generate power during concerts. Kinetic dance floors convert audience movements into energy, encouraging fans to jump on special tiles to power the event. Additionally, power bikes are available for fans to use, which, combined with solar panels and kinetic floors, charge smaller stage areas and essential equipment.

The band also implemented various measures to reduce waste and promote recycling, such as using recyclable LED wristbands and encouraging fans to use eco-friendly transportation and bring refillable water bottles.

Despite the inherent carbon intensity of live touring, Chris Martin has committed to using public transportation whenever possible, as demonstrated by the band’s arrival by train to their shows in Cardiff last year.

Coldplay’s success in reducing its carbon footprint sets a new benchmark for sustainability in the music industry. Their innovative approach and dedication to eco-friendly practices show that large-scale events can be both enjoyable and environmentally responsible.

Other musicians, such as pop rock band Maroon 5 and singer-songwriter Billie Eilish, have also taken steps to reduce the environmental footprint of their tours in recent years, including using biodiesel to power their buses. As more artists and bands follow suit, this achievement serves as a powerful example of how the industry can move towards a greener future.
